Implants offer a modern approach to restoring your smile after losing natural teeth. Misconceptions about implant surgery, however, may keep you from enjoying the benefits that implants have to offer. At Dental Care of Boca Raton, Dr. David Kagan and our team want you to be fully informed about implants for your teeth so you can make wise decisions concerning your oral health. Understanding the implant process can give you greater confidence to pursue this treatment.
In this post, your Boca Raton, Florida, implant dentist outlines the step-by-step process of renewing your smile with implants:
Your implant journey will start with a consultation by Dr. Kagan and our team to assess your mouth and oral health. We’ll examine your teeth, gums, and jaw, review your dental and medical history, take x-rays and 3D imaging, and discuss your options for implant surgery. This information will help us determine if implants are your best option for renewing your smile.
Once you’ve opted for implant treatment, we’ll plan your procedure, keeping your unique dental needs in mind. Together, we’ll decide on the type and number of implants you’ll need and strategically plan implant placement so you’ll know what to expect. Issues like tooth extraction and bone grafting will be addressed and factored into your treatment plan before scheduling your actual surgery.
Implants are small titanium posts that take the place of lost tooth roots. To place the implants, Dr. Kagan and our team need to make an incision in your gum to expose your jawbone and drill a small hole to accommodate the implant. After the implants are in place, we’ll suture your gum so it can heal. The entire process is done under local anesthesia. Sedation is also available to keep you calm and comfortable for your surgical procedure.
Implants become your new tooth roots through a process called osseointegration, in which they merge with the surrounding bone tissue. This process takes time, generally three to six months. For implant treatment to succeed, the implants must fuse securely with your jawbone to support your new teeth.
After the implants heal, we’ll again open your gum to attach abutments to the implants to support your new teeth. We’ll then wait a week or two for the abutments to heal.
Lastly, we’ll attach your new teeth to the abutments to complete your smile. Depending on your smile needs, your restorations may be dental crowns, a fixed bridge, or implant dentures.
Dr. Kagan and our team will schedule follow-up visits as needed to ensure your new smile looks and functions at its best!
