Patients with crooked or crowded teeth have more options than ever before to straighten them. Both conventional braces and clear aligner therapies (like Invisalign®) are highly effective. However, Invisalign® is often the more appealing option for our patients at Dental Care of Boca Raton, and here are five reasons for that:
Braces and clear aligners are effective because both treatments place consistent, controlled force on the teeth to gradually reposition them. However, our patients in the Boca Raton, Florida area appreciate how the clear aligners are made from smooth plastic. Braces are made from hard wires and brackets. Unlike braces, aligners can be removed. Braces can only be removed by your dentist or orthodontist. Also, while it may feel a little strange to have something in your mouth, most patients adjust to wearing aligners within a few days or weeks, and as treatment becomes a part of your routine and your mouth adjusts to the process.
With treatments like Invisalign®, it has never been easier to straighten your teeth and fix an underbite, overbite, or other bite-related issues. Since you can remove and reinsert each aligner at any time, Invisalign® doesn’t interfere with your day-to-day life. You continue to eat normally and enjoy your favorite foods throughout treatment, because there are no brackets, wires, and other “hardware” that make chewing food difficult. Also, Invisalign® does not require frequent visits to our office. We only need to assess treatment progress periodically because aligner therapy does not require adjustments or tightening (as is the case with braces).
Invisalign® is truly clear in appearance. Made from a safe and advanced plastic, each aligner is transparent. When you smile, no one can see your aligners. Braces are generally made from wires, brackets, and bands/elastics that are noticeable when you open your mouth. This feature makes Invisalign® attractive for image-conscious teens and adults alike.
It requires minimal effort to keep Invisalign® treatment on track. The aligners are easy to care for and easy to wear. Simply keep them in your mouth at all times except when eating or brushing your teeth (20-22 hours each day). Aligners are clearly marked to ensure you wear them in the correct order. Each aligner is worn for around 1-2 weeks. When not in use, they should be stored in the case that we provide to you. Periodic check-ins help us catch and address issues promptly before they affect your treatment.
Braces can be a risk factor for tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health conditions. They create nooks and crannies that can be difficult to clean and that require special care and products. When these areas are not cleaned thoroughly, harmful bacteria and plaque flourish. Invisalign® supports oral health. You can remove each aligner prior to brushing and flossing. You simply clean your teeth and gums normally. The aligners themselves are also easy to clean. Care is similar to how you might clean a nightguard or sports mouthguard; brush with soft-bristle toothbrushes and non-abrasive cleansers, and soak in a denture cleanser or other products recommended by the Dental Care of Boca Raton team.
By following the instructions above, treatment can also be completed in a fraction of the time required with braces. On average, treatment with Invisalign® takes 12-18 months, and with braces, 24 months or longer. Call (561) 556-6275 to start the process at our office in Boca Raton, FL, today.
