Bone Grafting in Boca Raton, FL
Bone grafting is a common surgical procedure used to fix problems caused by trauma, periodontal disease, congenital defects, or age-related deterioration. Bone grafts create a solid foundation for bone regeneration,
Whether you’re dealing with a traumatic injury or have inadequate bone structure due to tooth loss or other oral health issues, bone grafting can help provide stability for reconstructive treatments like dental implants.
At Dental Care of Boca Raton we use bone grafting to prepare for restorative dental procedures or to restore facial structure after an accident or trauma. Your dental health is important to us, and you can be sure you’re in great hands with our skilled team of dental professionals.
When Is Bone Grafting Needed?
Bone graft surgery is done to strengthen and restore the jaw bone. This may be needed for a variety of reasons.
Bone Loss Due to Periodontal Disease
If you have severe gum disease or periodontal disease that hasn’t been treated, it can cause loss of bone density in your jaw bone. Over a period of time, periodontal disease will slowly eat away at the teeth and gums, leading to tooth loss. When the root of the tooth is missing, it can cause the surrounding bone tissue to weaken. But in order to get new replacement teeth, there must be a sufficient quality and quantity of bone to support the new tooth root. In this case, the patient may need a bone graft and other periodontal services in order to prepare for dental implant treatment.
Facial Trauma
If you’ve been in an accident and experienced facial trauma, you may need a bone graft to restore your facial structure and improve the aesthetic appearance of your face.
Developmental Defects
A congenital or developmental defect is a condition that occurs at birth when the bone structure doesn’t grow in properly, or there is not enough bone growth. Depending on the extend of the defect, bone grafting can sometimes correct this issue.
Where Does Bone Grafting Material Come From?
Bone grafting can be done with either bone from another part of the patient’s body, synthetic bone, or donor bone:
- Bone From the Patient’s Body: common donor sites include the hips, legs, or ribs
- Synthetic Bone: synthetic material can sometimes be used to stimulate bone formation
- Donor Bone: bone banks can source from animal bone or a cadaver
What to Expect During the Bone Graft Procedure
Before the bone graft procedure, the oral surgeon will do several diagnostic tests and create a surgery plan. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, so you should refrain from eating or drinking on the day of your surgery and plan to have someone drive you home afterward.
The oral surgeon will source the donor bone in one of the ways mentioned above and then clean and prep the bone to prepare for placement. Then, they’ll place the graft into the implant site, and it will need time to heal before any other dental work can be done (such as dental implants).
During the healing process, you should avoid strenuous activities, eat a soft food diet, and keep the graft site clean. Once you are fully healed, you will return for a follow-up visit to plan any additional dental work that needs to be done.
