If you have a damaged or misshaped tooth or perhaps a tooth with significant enamel erosion or serious decay, you might wonder how it can be repaired. Sometimes the best restoration in that situation may be a porcelain crown.
Simply put, a dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is cemented in place over a tooth to restore its appearance, strength, and function. Usually, a crown encases the tooth to the gum line.
When you come to us for a crown, we will make two appointments for you. The first appointment is to prepare for the permanent crown. We will remove the damage or decay from your tooth. Then we will make an impression of the area that will be used to make an accurate permanent crown. We will place a temporary crown on your tooth to protect it, and the impression will be sent to a lab for the permanent crown to be created.
The second appointment is made when the permanent crown comes back from the lab. The temporary crown will be removed, and we will place the permanent crown on the tooth. If there is no need for adjustments and you are happy with the feel, we will cement it in place, and you leave with your new smile.
A porcelain crown has major advantages over other crown materials. They have a superior appearance — no other crown material provides the translucence and color-matching of porcelain. Metal crowns tend to show a black line at the gum line over time, and they may cause allergic reactions. Porcelain crowns don’t change color, are biocompatible, and their durability means you’ll have the natural appearance for a very long time.
